総絞り染めで菱などの幾何学文様を染めた小紋から。
菱文様は古くは縄文土器にも施されている文様で、植物のヒシの葉や実の形を模しているとされています。
ヒシは繁殖しやすいことから「子孫繁栄」の象徴とされています。
総絞りは染める前に生地すべてを非常に細かく括る必要がある職人の技術と手間を要す技法で多くの染め技法の中でも最も贅沢なもののひとつとして知られています。
